I am looking to make my own soaps for wedding favors. I want to do colored soap and I will be pouring it into shaped molds (flip-flops for a luau theme!). Is there a certain type of soap base that is better for melting and pouring that is also good for coloring? I was thinking of doing something with shea butter…but I don't know if that will work or not. Any suggestions?

Here is a web site with different kinds of melt and pour bases, including one with Shea butter.

Normally you melt the base, mix in the color and fragrance, then pour into the mold. There really isn't a "better" base, there are just bases that give an effect you like.

If you want a nice opaque color, try goat's milk base. If you want a translucent color, try aloe base. I make shea butter soaps, but I can't imagine using the butter in a melt and pour base. I'm picturing cloudy and yellow-ish brown, probably not what you want.

    Good luck!
